As part of Tekron’s work with the National Grid Corporation of Philippines (NGCP) to modernize and upgrade electricity supply in the fast growing ASEAN economy, Tekron hosted two senior engineers at its HQ in Wellington for a rigorous 3-day training program. The program covered Factory Acceptance Testing, Training in Configuration, Use and Troubleshooting of Tekron’s top of the line TCG 02-G Atomic oscillator as well as Telecom specific communication options. This unique set of Tekron features enables NGCP to transition its legacy substation and telecom synchronization services (IRIG-B and E1/T1) to a modern IP (PTP and NTP) solution over Ethernet. Particular attention was paid during training to the advanced security features particularly with increased cyber security concerns as well as the units’ outstanding holdover performance, and clock accuracy. With the evolution of technologies such as Line Differential Protection, Phasor Measurement and Sampled Values, Smart Substations require a new unprecedented level of accuracy and time sync availability, not previously required in the Industry. The Transmission System Operators in Philippines required a GNSS Clock designed and built for substation applications. The solution required the Substation clock to provide time synchronization to facilitate their IEC 61850 aspirations (PTP Power Profile, NTP, Optical PPS), and in addition support legacy time protocols (IRIG-B, serial time strings, 1 per 10). Moreover, the system required multiple levels of failover; where in the event of GNSS outage, the clock will revert to the Telecommunications Network and sync to the PTP Telecom profile Grandmaster, or in the absence of PTP availability on the Telecommunications network, revert to its own internal Atomic Clock reference module.
