Challenge: Implementing IEEE 1588v2 to Modernize the Traditional Power Grid
Modernization of a power grid can be expensive, and often requires upgrades to key equipment such as protection relays. Depending on equipment not all devices will support the latest timing signal, IEEE 1588v2 (PTPv2). The requirement for legacy time code signal support may mean a user has to install extra timing masters, or run long lengths of cable to support these devices.
Solutions
This solution provides isolation between panels, reduces cable runs, and reduces capital expenditure in the event that the end user has to change manufacturers or upgrade non PTP compliant equipment.Signal translators solve the problem of long cable runs, by connecting directly into an IEEE 1588v2 (PTPv2) timing signal. The translator converts the signal from PTP to IRIG-B, or similar legacy time codes.

Challenge: Time Sync Operation Without Disruption
Transmission and Distribution System Operators in Australia and New Zealand observed the effects of transients on traditional low voltage unbalanced IRIG-B signals, which caused time sync corruption to connected Protection and Control devices within the bus and disrupt operations.
Solutions
Tekron developed the Isolated Timing Repeater which has isolated and floating inputs, and can convert from Multimode fiber to Copper and vice versa.
The Isolated Timing Repeater allows a Tekron clock with Isolated and balanced TTL outputs or Multimode fiber outputs to connect to many Protection and Control IED’s, while preventing the formation of ground loops, mitigating against transients and induced voltage, and ensuring transients affecting one IED do not propagate to other IED’s connected to the same bus. In addition to distributing TTL or unmodulated IRIG-B over fiber, the Isolated Timing repeater can also convert to AM IRIG-B at the same time. The Combination of Tekron’s Clocks and Isolated Timing Repeaters also typically simplifies and reduces IRIG-B cabling and allows for future expansion of the IRIG-B bus with minimal disruption.
